When Is the Best Time to Sealcoat a Driveway in Anderson?

September 9, 2026

Anderson's sealing window is set by pavement temperature, dry hours and an October 18 normal first freeze, not by the calendar on the fridge.

What sealer needs from an Anderson day

Sealer is a surface film, roughly the thickness of a business card, and it only becomes a film if the water in it can leave. That takes three things at once: pavement above roughly 50 degrees F and rising, and staying there through the night that follows; about 24 dry hours after the last coat; and enough sun and moving air to pull the moisture out. Take away any one and the coat stays soft, tracks onto tires, or washes into the street in the next shower.

The 50-degree number is a pavement temperature, not the forecast high. A driveway under a maple canopy sits colder than one in full sun and holds dew longer, so two neighbors in Edgewood or Country Club Heights can get different start times from the same contractor. And if the night slides toward freezing before the film has set, the cure stalls.

April is for inspection, not sealing

Anderson's normal last spring freeze is April 19, and the latest on record is May 27, 1961. The Indianapolis station averages 3.7 nights at or below 32 degrees F in April and 0.2 in May. Anderson also sits on Crosby soils with a perched seasonal water table 0.5 to 2.0 feet below the surface through winter and spring, so the ground under the driveway stays cold and wet after the lawn greens up.

That is why April is the month to walk the driveway, not seal it. Thawed ground shows standing water, soft spots and every crack that opened over the winter; by September, evaporation and settling hide most of it. The realistic opening of the sealing season is late May into June, once the base has drained and the pavement holds 50 degrees through the night.

Spring also brings the year's most rain days. May averages 13.3 days with measurable precipitation at Indianapolis, the most of any month, and June is the wettest by volume at 4.95 inches. A May booking is a bet on a dry two-day hole in a wet month.

Summer: fast cures and afternoon storms

July and August are the warmest months, with average highs of 85.2 and 84.3 degrees F, and a coat cures quickly on that pavement. Rain days fall to 10.3 in July and 8.3 in August, so scheduling is easier than in spring. The risk shifts to pop-up thunderstorms: a storm inside the first 24 hours can wash an uncured coat into the gutter.

Summer is also when driveway sealcoating goes on most evenly, with two thin coats setting up in one long day. The tradeoff is demand: the busiest months on the Anderson calendar are May and September, and July fills in behind them.

September is the best month in Anderson, and a countdown

By the numbers, September is Anderson's ideal sealing month. It has the fewest rain days of the year at Indianapolis, 7.9, with 3.14 inches of precipitation, an average high of 78.2 degrees F and an average low of 57.4. Pavement is still warm from summer, humidity drops, and the leaves are still on the trees.

The catch is the calendar. Anderson's normal first 36-degree frost is October 6 and its normal first 32-degree freeze is October 18; the first 28-degree hard freeze normally lands October 31. The earliest 32-degree freeze on record at Anderson was September 19, 1901. October's average low at Indianapolis drops to 45.5 degrees F, with 2.1 freezing nights that month and 13.0 in November. Every week past mid-September, the odds of a warm, dry two-day window shrink.

  • Book a fall job for September; the first week of October is the last reliable stretch in a normal year.
  • Ask the contractor to check pavement temperature in the morning, not just the forecast high.
  • Have cracks filled first. Sealer will not bridge them.
  • Blow the surface clean and dry the morning of the job; leaves trapped under the coat leave bare spots later.
  • Keep cars off for the full 24 dry hours, longer if the night dips into the 40s.

Crack filling runs later than sealing

Sealing stops when the warm nights do, but crack filling does not. INDOT's crack-sealing specification only prohibits the work when the pavement is wet or the air is below 40 degrees F, and the Purdue study written for INDOT found crack filling on state roads typically ran from November through April. Hot-pour rubberized sealant, the ASTM Type II class INDOT uses, goes down hot and bonds without warm pavement.

That gives Anderson homeowners a second window. If October gets away from you, hot rubber crack filling in late October or November still closes the pipes that feed water into the base before the freezing nights stack up. On Crosby clay that will not drain, that is the single highest-value maintenance step of the year, worth more than the sealcoat itself.

New asphalt, and how often to come back

A freshly paved driveway should go through a full summer before its first sealcoat; until then, keep sharp turning and heavy loads off it. After that, the rhythm in this climate is a sealcoat every two to three years, crack filling every spring, and patching of soft or alligatored spots before winter.

Cost follows condition more than square footage: the cracks to fill, the coat count and the sand load move a quote more than the size of the slab, and the cost page walks through those drivers. When you are ready to book, a sealcoating contractor who works Anderson's calendar will say plainly whether a date is a September job or a next-June job.

Quick Answers

Can you sealcoat a driveway in October in Anderson?

Early October, sometimes; late October, rarely. The job needs pavement above roughly 50 degrees F and rising, 24 dry hours after the last coat, and a night that stays well above freezing. Anderson's normal first 36-degree frost is October 6 and the normal first 32-degree freeze is October 18, so the first week of the month is the last dependable window in a typical year. After that, fill the cracks and book the sealcoat for late May.

What happens if it rains after sealcoating?

Rain inside the first 24 hours can wash uncured sealer off the surface, leaving streaks, thin spots and bare edges that have to be recoated. Light rain after the film has set usually does no harm. Contractors look for a dry two-day window: September, with 7.9 rain days on average at Indianapolis, offers the most of them, while May, with 13.3, offers the fewest.

How soon can a new asphalt driveway be sealed?

Not in its first season. New asphalt should go through a full summer before its first sealcoat so the surface can firm up; sealing it fresh wastes the coat. In the meantime keep it clean and watch for cracks. Once the first coat goes on, a driveway in Anderson's freeze-thaw climate is normally resealed every two to three years, with cracks filled every spring.
